Since its introduction by British colonists in the 17th century, Cricket has become India's most popular sport. From the humble beginnings of the Oriental Cricket Club and the Bombay Quadrangular tournament (English team, Parsi team, Hindu team and Muslim team), India has developed into a formidable competitor on the world stage. The country's first Test victory as an independent nation was against England at Madras in 1952, which came four years after being crushed 4-nil in its first Test series against Australia (Sir Donald Bradman's Invincibles). Hard to beat on the Subcontinent

India has always enjoyed more success at home than away where the conditions and pitches suit its spinners and batting style. The early eighties is a noteworthy period of play for the country as it became comfortable with the one day game and enjoyed a tremendous run of form. Led by legends such as Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Mohammed Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar and Ravi Shastri, India won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, followed by the Asia Cup in 1984 and the World Championship of Cricket in 1985; although Test victories outside the subcontinent remained rare.

Modern Era and Twenty20 Champions

In the 1990's the addition of batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly further bolstered the team and it enjoyed solid performances against the world's best cricket teams. More recently, Mahendra Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Irfan Pathan and Yuvraj Singh, under the captaincy of Dravid, redefined the team and helped it complete its transformation from Test specialists to limited over champions. India won the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007, defeating Pakistan in a thrilling encounter.
